History

In the late 1940's, YB Quezada, who had recently returned from serving his country during World War II, started La Bonita in Los Angeles, CA. Then, in 1958, with the assistance of his sister, Maria E. Lopez, he started his small tortilla manufacturing and retail operation in Bakersfield. In the 13 years of operation, the small business provided for the families of both Maria E. Lopez and her brother, YB Quezada. They decided to retire and sell the business to their nephew. La Bonita was incorporated as a California Corporation in 1971 by the nephew, Edmundo Quezada, and his friend, Juan Ornelas.

Back in 1971, the business crew included Edmundo, Juan, and a half-time employee. The cooking of corn for the tortillas, manufacturing, and distribution duties were shared by all three. The company fleet was comprised of one used van that was purchased for $300, plus the personal vehicles of Edmundo and Juan. The days were long and business was brisk. Several years of 7-day work weeks that included 16-hour days seemed endless. Cognizant of the formula for success, quality products and service, hard work and determination was the driving force for both partners.

Since the invention of automated machinery La Bonita has more than quadrupled in production in size. This has helped the company provide better service as well as a better product, thus enabling the acquisition of large grocery stores. Our extensive line of corn and flour tortillas, which range in size, weight, and color, has proven to be very successful for many, many restuarants in the community.

The successful small business was built on hard work ethics and set the foundation of what is La Bonita today. The business grew and prospered providing both corn and flour tortillas, chips, taco and tostada shells as well as a very large line of spices and herbs to the community. The dream was to establish a competitive business and make La Bonita a household name. The formula for success works, and includes having a dream, hard work, determination, and giving people what they want: a quality product, good service, and a fair price. As Edmundo and Juan oversee the cooking of corn meal, it lets off a tantalizing aroma that goes hand in hand with the sweet smell of success.
